Argus launches Africa fertilizer pricing service

      Share

Argus, the global energy and commodity price reporting agency, has launched a dedicated fertilizer pricing service for Africa, marking the first time market participants will have standardized benchmarks for shipping and inland fertilizer costs across the continent.

The new weekly service, unveiled on Sept. 24, offers assessments for nitrogen, phosphate, potash, compound NPKs and sulphur, along with supporting data on supply and demand trends. By shedding light on an historically opaque market, Argus aims to provide traders, producers and governments with tools to optimize shipments and investment decisions.

Africa has long been a supplier of fertilizer raw materials, including natural gas and phosphate rock, with exports from North and West Africa feeding global markets. But the continent’s role is shifting as rapid population growth and rising agricultural demand transform it into one of the fastest-expanding fertilizer consumer markets.

Adrian Binks, chairman and chief executive of Argus, said the service would help improve efficiency and transparency. “Africa has the potential to become one of the world’s largest fertilizer markets as its population and agricultural economy grow,” he said.

The service also extends beyond agriculture. Sulphur coverage will support mining companies operating in southern Africa’s Copper Belt, where the raw material is a key input in copper and cobalt processing. Those metals are central to global clean energy supply chains, giving the service broader relevance for industries tied to the energy transition.

The Africa-focused benchmarks complement Argus’s existing fertilizer services for Brazil, North America and Europe, many of which are used in physical and derivatives contracts. By incorporating Africa into its global suite, Argus is positioning the continent as a more integral part of the international fertilizer market, at a time when global food security and supply chain resilience remain in sharp focus.
