Pro Farm secures EPA approval for RinoTec and launches Arino for tuber crops

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted registration for RinoTec Technology, a biocontrol agent developed by Pro Farm Group. The technology is designed to combat plant-parasitic nematodes, wireworms, whitefly, thrips, mites, lepidopterans, and other pests affecting row and specialty crops such as corn, potatoes, tree nuts, and vegetables. The registration follows five years of research and testing in university and independent trials.

Arino, a new insecticide/nematicide powered by RinoTec, has also been introduced for use in potatoes, onions, and other tuberous crops. The product is undergoing on-farm demonstrations in 2025 and is expected to be available for commercial use in 2026, pending state approvals.

RinoTec’s mode of action includes absorption by plant roots and trans-epidermal mobility when applied as a foliar treatment. The substance is designed to deter pests through ingestion and by triggering plant responses that repel below-ground threats. Researchers indicate that the technology has shown effectiveness comparable to or exceeding conventional insecticides.

Industry estimates suggest that pests such as corn rootworm cost U.S. growers billions of dollars annually. Common chemical treatments include pyrethroids and organophosphates, which pose environmental and resistance concerns. RinoTec has been classified within the Insect Resistance Action Committee’s UNB category, indicating a non-Bt bacterial agent with an uncertain mode of action. Laboratory studies suggest potential effectiveness against Bt-resistant insect populations.

Pro Farm Group, based in Davis, California, specializes in naturally derived pest management and plant health technologies. RinoTec-powered products will be part of its broader portfolio, which includes Venerate bioinsecticide, Regalia biofungicide, and Emergen L biological fertilizer.
