Syngenta shares five key AI trends that set to revolutionize agriculture in 2025

Syngenta Group’s CEO Jeff Rowe shared some insights on how artificial intelligence (AI) will revolutionize agriculture in 2025 during his presentation in Basel, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum 2025. He highlighted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on agriculture and predicted that 2025 would be the inaugural year in which AI entirely revolutionizes the agricultural sector from research and development to field application.

Syngenta has identified five pivotal AI trends set to reshape agriculture this year:

      1. AI in R&D: Syngenta now incorporates machine learning across all its research initiatives to discover new active ingredients for both synthetic and biological products.
      2. AI in the Field: New AI-driven systems are being deployed to monitor and predict soil health, creating detailed maps of soil nutrients, texture, and carbon levels, which are invaluable to growers.
      3. AI in Farmers’ Hands: GenAI-enabled digital tools are now available, serving as agronomic advisors that assist farmers in optimizing crop management strategies.
      4. AI in Pest Management: Precision agriculture technologies and data-driven decision-making are helping farmers target pest control measures more efficiently, applying them only where needed.
      5. AI in Supply Chain Management: AI tools enhance demand forecasting and market prediction, reducing overproduction and waste, thereby streamlining logistics and improving overall efficiency.

Rowe emphasized the pivotal role of AI and digital tools in promoting sustainable farming practices. “Advanced monitoring systems that integrate satellite imagery, drones, and soil maps facilitate precise crop management,” he said. Predictive analytics offer farmers proactive strategies instead of reactive measures.

The global AgriTech market is poised for significant growth, with a valuation projected to jump from $24.19 billion in 2023 to $54.17 billion by 2029. Moreover, the market for AI in agriculture is expected to expand from $1.7 billion in 2023 to $4.7 billion by 2028, highlighting the substantial economic potential of these technologies. A recent World Economic Forum report suggested that digital agriculture could increase the agricultural GDP of low- and middle-income countries by $450 billion annually.

During the discussion, Suzanne DiBianca, Executive Vice President and Chief Impact Officer at Salesforce, joined Rowe in stressing the importance of collaborative efforts among policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders to facilitate farmers’ adoption of technology and reduce financial and technical barriers.

The integration of digital technologies with sustainable farming practices enhances productivity and equips farmers to address climate change effectively. The speakers concluded that this synergy is crucial for developing a resilient food system that benefits both the planet and its population.

The session was live-streamed on Bloomberg Live’s YouTube channel and is available for replay.
