First-ever ammonia and propane co-loaded vessel completes voyage from US to Europe

Trafigura and CF Industries announced the successful completion of the first-ever co-loaded shipment of ammonia and propane. The Green Power Medium Gas Carrier (MGC) embarked from the US in early January and safely arrived in Europe, marking a significant milestone in the transportation of alternative fuels. This collaborative effort highlights the operational viability of using low-carbon ammonia as a marine fuel. Ammonia, sourced from CF Industries, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG or propane), were transported in separate tanks, demonstrating an innovative approach to maximizing vessel capacity and efficiency.

Patricio Norris, Global Head of Ammonia and LPG for Trafigura, emphasized the dual benefits of this strategy, stating, “By co-loading ammonia and LPG, we not only enhance the economic aspect for our clients but also contribute to reduced emissions by minimizing the number of voyages.”

The project aligns with global efforts to transition from traditional heavy fuel oils to alternatives with lower carbon footprints. Ammonia is increasingly recognized as a promising low-carbon fuel for various applications, including in the maritime sector and for coal co-firing.

The operation’s logistics were meticulously planned and executed, involving a thorough review of regulations, detailed risk assessments, and collaboration with the US Coast Guard, ports, shipowner Purus, and STS company International Fender Providers (IFP). The stringent segregation measures ensured no crossover of liquids or vapors between the different cargoes.

Following its transatlantic journey, the vessel successfully discharged the LPG in the Mediterranean for domestic heating purposes. At the same time, the ammonia was offloaded at Tees Port for use by CF Fertilisers UK.
