Advancing Wheat Cultivation: Syngenta’s Solutions and Insights

Globally, wheat is a pivotal cereal crop, with chief producers being countries such as China, India, the United States, Russia, and Canada. Currently, about 220Mha is used worldwide for wheat cultivation. From the early 2000s till today, wheat demand has surged by more than 35% to approximately 785 million tons, reflecting the crop’s dietary significance and population growth. Simultaneously, production has witnessed a 35% rise, standing at nearly 790 million tons. Remarkably, the yield has advanced by 30%, averaging 3.52 t/ha.

Syngenta experts have discussed the prospects of wheat cultivation in the extensive interview. According to their views, several factors drive the fluctuating patterns in wheat planting, yields, and quality:

      1. Climate and Environmental Conditions: Wheat thrives in temperate zones with specific environmental requisites.
      2. Soil Quality: Fertile, well-drained soils are crucial for wheat’s optimal growth.
      3. Weeds, Pests, and Diseases: Effective management and treatments are vital to curtail potential damages from pests and diseases.
      4. Technology and Farming Practices: Adoption of contemporary agricultural techniques can substantially elevate wheat yields.
      5. Market Demand and Economics: The wheat market plays a pivotal role in influencing the extent of its cultivation.
      6. Research and Development: Continuous advancements in wheat research contribute to its augmented yields and quality.
      7. Global Trade and Supply Chain: International trading patterns play a significant role in shaping wheat production decisions.

Syngenta’s innovation is evident in its line-up of solutions against wheat diseases, insects, and weeds. Products such as ADEPIDYN technology, launched initially in Argentina, have demonstrated efficacy against crucial wheat diseases. Moreover, other products like SOLATENOL technology, Proven AMISTAR Technology, and seed treatments like PLINAZOLIN and TYMIRIUM technology have all played a part in safeguarding and enhancing wheat crops.

The company is also pushing boundaries with the introduction of biocontrol products like VIXERAN, QUANTIS, and TALETE in various regions. Additionally, Syngenta Seedcare has amplified its platform of biological products, introducing names such as ARVATICO and EPIVIO Energy, among others.

Regarding wheat seeds and traits, Robert Giles, EAME Cereals Strategy & Portfolio Lead, Syngenta Seeds, commented on the potential of unlocking the next phase of enhanced wheat yields. He emphasized the growing acceptance of gene-edited crops and the continuous introduction of new conventional wheat varieties.

Jon Rich, NA Cereals Operations Head, Syngenta Seeds, highlighted the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline crop use efficiencies related to fertilizer, water, and reduced seed treatment applications. This move aims to pave the way for a sustainable farming future.
